Chew´s Agriculture – Cage Free Eggs
With the goal of providing ethical products that respect the environment and animals, Chew’s Agriculture Pte Ltd, based in Singapore, sought to obtain the Certified Humane® seal. Chew’s Agriculture, a leading egg producer, was the first in the country to use the cage-free system and also the first and only farm in Singapore with Certified Humane accreditation. The company adopted the cage-free production model in 2014 and upgraded into an aviary system when the farm was relocated and redeveloped in 2021.
The producer learned about the Certified Humane® animal welfare certification through contacts from HSI (Humane Society International). Since they already had cage-free egg production, pursuing the seal came naturally as a way to meet international standards. “Each egg produced under the cage-free model is individually selected and labeled so that our consumers can be sure that our product has undergone strict quality control,” says Edvin Lim, the company’s director. The production is supplied to major supermarkets, online sales platforms like Redmart and Amazon Prime, and hotel chains.
Raising Happy Animals
The family of producers has always worked closely with animals, considering them part of the family and viewing their welfare as fundamentally important. They have adopted the best practices to raise happy animals. “We are fully integrated into the farm and manage the entire production chain, from breeding birds, egg incubation, and bird rearing to laying,” says the producer. Around 200 employees and many family members work on the 20-hectare farm, caring for more than 1,000,000 birds. Of these, more than 65,000 laying hens are raised in the cage-free system across three barns.
Chew’s Agriculture foresaw a growing demand for humanely produced products in the market and invested in the best and most recent cage-free system techniques, allowing the birds space to express their natural behaviors, such as scratching, interacting with other hens, and dust bathing. Allowing the birds to engage in these activities keeps them happy and healthy, which even improves the quality of the eggs. This enables the company to bring the certified system to its consumers.
